LAKE LIVENGSTON STATE PARK: A LAKE MAZE

I think I know where I am. Here, on the map, I am here at this fork… or maybe this fork, or maybe this cross. To tell the truth, I don’t know where I am.

I have been stuck in this maze for maybe a while. It has been about an hour since we left camp. We were at Lake Livingston State Park with my dad’s company pals. They had planned this campout for a long time.

I thought about who made the map. They sure did not pay attention. On the trail we were on, we were confused a lot. The network of trails on the map did not reflect the real forest.

Along the path, we saw trails that were unmarked on the map, and trails marked on the map that were not in the real world, meaning there was no possible way unless we tried to go through the entangled mess of pine needles and trees.

Everywhere I looked was tall pine trees. Everywhere I listened were chirping birds, happy with their lives, and knowing exactly where they were, unlike us. But there we were, in the great wilderness.

It felt good. I stopped and reached into my backpack and grabbed my water bottle out, drinking some. It felt refreshing and safe, because I knew with water I could always survive, even if we were lost…

My dad caught up with me from behind and took a sip of water. He chatted with me and then we ate a cracker together. It tasted salty. I climbed back onto my bike and rode on.

It didn’t take long before we noticed we were going in circles. We saw the same rock, the same fallen trunk, and the same spot. It didn’t feel good knowing we went in circles.

“Come on!” My dad encouraged, so we went in a circle again. Finally, when my dad was convinced that “no, we didn’t miss the trail”, we went in another direction. Soon, we hit the familiar main path.

My dad and I decided to again stake out on another obvious but unmarked trail. I went along on the trail. The piney ground felt soft and perfect for biking. We rode along until ahead, we saw a road.

My dad used the compass to determine that going along that road would bring us to the dock. It sounded reasonable, since the road went northward and the map (although quite untrusting) said the dock was north.

When riding down the road, I noticed two fences, one on the left and one on the right of the road, which we came from. The one on the left was obviously a property line, so we guessed that was the park boundary.

Ahead of us, we saw a sign. Far ahead, the only word we could recognize was “Notice”. I went ahead and read the sign. “Lake Livingston Homes are now open to moving in…” Moving in? What was this getting to?

It didn’t take long for me to see the street sign “Livingston Dr.” and piece together the information. That trail was a way out of the park, and we had stumbled upon it. The fences were both property lines, only the left side was private.

Before anyone noticed, me and my dad went back into the park. We rode all the way back to the main route before anyone noticed. We relaxed. I figured the map did not show that trail for a reason.

My dad still wanted to go to the dock. We carefully made sure not to go on the wrong trail, not to go out the park, and to follow the map, and made it to the dock. At last, we had arrived.

The first thing we noticed was that it was not the beautiful dock that we had saw before while riding (going in circles, to be exact). Instead, it was a small trail going around the outside of the bay.

I guessed that it was probably the private property dock. So we found a way to get down the steep hill and not to get into the depth of Livingston Lake. When we did, my dad decided to ride along the edge of the lake.

It was great except for some certain spots. The most common one was missing pavement. There would be an area where all you saw was steel linings and weeds. The weeds were very bumpy, and as the pavement was pretty high up, I found it hard to get back onto the pavement.

In less than ten minutes, our little journey was over as we came across the end of the pavement. There was a little bend that went into the land.

I was pretty mad because right across from us, less than maybe one-hundred yards were the pavement. I wanted to bike right cross, but you couldn’t bike across the lake.

So we turned around and went back up. I took a look at the screen houses. It looked all right. It had great ventilation, which I thought might be a bad thing at night when the air was cold.

The screen house looked pretty secure. It might be too secure. If one mosquito came in, that was one mosquito that couldn’t come out from that screen house. I laughed at that thought, but then remembered that I was living in one myself later. I smiled. It looked fun.

We went back to camp just in time to make it in time for the delicious lunch. Some friends that had come along had made a scrumptious dinner.

Turkey, fruit, bread, dumplings, barbeque, and mouth-watering pork-on-a-stick made my stomach full all the way to the tip. Just when we least expected it, a guest arrived.

“Can we join in?” they asked. I happily agreed. Why did they take so long to arrive? After all, here was someone I could play with.\

I spent the rest of the time playing with them until night, when we went to the bonfire.

At the bonfire, someone threw in a matchstick. The fire did not blaze. Instead, it glowed lightly. Until somebody poured a bucket of oil on top.

The flammable oil made the fire lighten up intensely. I scrambled back as the flaming bark began to shoot away like missiles attacking. It was fun.

That night, I went into our van as my dad set up the camping car. What was a van was not a almost-full-fledged RV, only a bit small. It looked like the same old van from the outside. But just like never judging a book by its cover, the inside was much better.

On the ground lay the long bed, which laid on top of the foldable back-row. Chairs in the middle row had been removed already. I laid down and felt the seat lock. It was the only thing that made it feel not like a RV.

The next morning, I was noisily awaked by two friends I played with yesterday who were knocking. I whipped into my jeans, as they could see through the glass, and what they saw was me in my night-wear with a thick and huge blanket over me. Not a good reputation maker.

That morning, after most of the people left, we went bike riding. Going back to the campsite, we noticed everyone had left. We biked on over to a trail next to a playground and saw some of the people in the group.

It clicked in my mind as I realized they had come over here to play and eat. Too bad for them, they didn’t have a pot. We did, though. So while I played on the playground with everyone else, they made lunch.

What was for lunch was eggs, and my dad’s very own recipe for spaghetti with my mom’s very own recipe for sauce. It ended up being a delicious dinner.

After lunch, we got ready to pack up. As I sat on the car, I looked outside. From trails to playgrounds to campsites, Lake Livingston State Park had it all.

Which is why I wondered why it didn’t have everything on the map.

I Am Boring

It was a day. I was in my mom’s car. My dad was chatting with my uncle. They were having a good time chatting. I looked at the empty seat next to me. There was a mat on top. And on that mat was a chain. Attached to that chain was my wallet. Delighted, I opened my wallet.

I had four cards. Goowy is an online desktop that has everything you could need. Well, almost everything you need: desktop, minis (for little at-a-glance things like the Personalized Homepage on Google), Mail (with lots of providers), File Storage (one gig free), Contacts, Calender, Integrated IM for major providers, and lots of games when you want to relax.

It is an ideal thing for you and the rest of the world. For me, I set it as Active Desktop and added it as a Web thing and maximized it onto my desktop, removed and hid my icons, and then locked it. My desktop was now a goowy desktop.

The only con was that it didn't have a biult in web browser. Well, I didn't really expect it to. It runs INSIDE a browser, so there is abselutly no need for a biult in web browser. Other hope-they-will-do things are more IM providers (they've got AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Goowy (their own), AOL, and GTalk) and maybe some fixed bugs.

Awesome thing. The name makes sense, even. Once you start using it and start sticking with it (or gooing with it) you will wonder how you lived without it.

A Long Post

This post might be a paticularly long one, so do not frustrate if you cannot finish it in one minute. If you can, well, then I can only say that you are a mighty fast reader for my blog, and you might better off use RSS.

Today is County Fair Day, so you might be guessing why this post appeared at this time. There is no school, and my parents are all freaking out and spanking the school district. I quote my dad: "When there's a chance, they have a holiday. When there's no chance anyways, they still have a holiday."

Well, that was pretty annoyed. This morning, I decided to find a little information about my blog. You can try it too. Go to Google and type in "digitalrat" and the first listing is "DigitalRAT.NET", therefore my blog is first under there. It was nice knowing that. At least a bot can find my website, not that any of my friends can also find it...

Yesterday, I did not go to sleep until sometime near 11:00 because of my "printing press". You should go try printing 132 pages fully color in one night. I only got to 66 pages, but that was better than nothing.

Has one minute passed yet? If it hasn't, I guess I will have to continue droning on and on and on and on...

No stopping, must continue...

Snore.

Sad and Intiguing...

It is a sad and intiguing thing... HEEYA! I know my household is a bit crazy 'bout buying new computers, but these days, it's one computer's down, and another one goes POOF! and then one computers too slow, so another one goes POOF! It's quite fun doing that.

Anyways this new one is a 250GB hard drive and a 1024MB memory dual-core DDR (the DDR2 was not in the package [sniffle]). It's got a DVD write and a CD write and a DVD read and a CD read all in one little smacking box! Now, that was a great deal for 499 bucks.

According to this pattern, the next computer will be in approximentally 4 weeks...

Crash! What happened? I have no idea. What the witness (and the person who messed the comp up in the first place) says that she (not I am saying she) turned on the computer. The system froze.

Obviously worried, she turned off the computer through the switchboard. Attempting to turn on the system, the /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM file was corrupt. Failure. 2846...

Trying to fix the computer, going through the Recovery Console was a no-no. The autoDetect... no-no. The enclosure... just finished, also a nono (2846...)

It looks like real wood (notice I used the word "looks"), but like all tables now made, it is made of compressed wood (notice I used "made").

It was about time I got a new one. The old one is now my computer table. We've also been doing a 50% "room makeover edition". We have a new bookshelf in the workroom too, along with my new computer.

Believe me, last night my dad moved his pillow over to my mom's side of the bed and patted my mom softly on her butt. Then he went to sleep. The next morning, he woke up and nearly gave himself a heart attack.

You must be wondering where I was. These days a lot has been going on with education, so it's not really like I have time to update it. Here's some stuff that ought to keep you up-to-date.

Sunlight, Ph. D. is the newest member of the writing group. You should be hearing from him soon, although he doesn't talk much on the blog.

Sorry for the wait; I'll try to stay on for as long as possible and try to make up for my absense.

Heres one. Dig it.
By getting rid of the new feels and looks (the title bars and the taskbar) you'll speed up your system. Also, don't use images for backgrounds. A good detailed large image of your dog takes up memory.
You paid for the memory; KB by KB, and you paid it so that your applications could use it. Don't let a picture that you cover up most of the time hog all the memory.

EDIT

Monday, July 10, 2006. A post on switching to Firefox. The last sentence was "Take time to switch, IEbeta2 is turning out good for WinVista."

Big fat edit. Big humungo edit. Big embarrasing edit.

I said the wrong thing.

I feel like hurtling Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 out the window. Except I can't. However, I did hurtle it out of my computer. Internet Explorer 7 (I'll nickname it StupidThing for now) is horrible. Internet Explorer 7, to put it in a good way, does not meet my requirements and lacks in design.

The tabs are light blue, and every picture that is viewed is fuzzy and pixelated, and even Microsoft's own office.microsoft.com recognizes it as Mozilla! OH MY GOSH. And the registry tweak fixes things up a little.

I tried the beta, and I ain't trying it again. Until I must get it, I will not get it.

End dispatch.

Here is one I made that I will show you how to do. The photo appears on the left. Now of course you know how I made it, right?
First of all, you need Microsoft Photodraw V2. If you have an older version or a newer one I won't be sure it will work. Begin by going to the Insert menu and clicking on "Photodraw Content..."

You will be presented with a dialog box. Navigate to "Food And Dining" folder and insert BK0701.MIX. It looks like the one on the right.

Now drag it and resize it so it takes up all of the space on the "Default Picture" sized blank white area. Go to the "effects" tab and click on "Color Effects." On the "Correct selection" panel, choose "Color Balance" from the only dropdown menu.

Select:

Now go to the dropdown menu and choose "Colorize". Click on bright green and drag it all the way to the right, or until the number is 100.

Note: It may not look exactly alike, because I did another version of it again.

If you take the text I supply and paste it into Word; then move it up and down in "Print Layout" view, the effect is truely awesome. It creates two layers of "codelike" text if you take the scroll bar and move it up and down rapidly.

Use "Century Gothic" as the font on "12 pt." Copy this text until it takes up precisly 2 pages, with the last line all the way to the end. Type zeros and ones in a random. Once you think it's enough, copy and paste it.
It may not always work.

Well, it was new in 2000. But now, it's not. Why isn't everybody using it then? Two moniters? Awesome. Well, the truth is that most people don't know the feature, and some graphic cards don't support it.
I, very fortunely, have two moniters and it is totally awesome. Some people don't know about it.

It is really quite easy to install two moniters. However, you do need a graphics card supporting it. Once you plug it in, Windows should and will reconize it as a secondary display. You will find in the "display" properties, the settings tab will appear differently, allowing you to drag the visual view of desktops to match thier physical order.

I have tried to keep it away from you people for a long time, but today it must be said. Get ready:
Mosquito's can hang out in toilets. They hover over the surface of the water. Sometimes they drown. Mostly they drown. But sometimes they don't. And they keep their appetite when they hang out in toilet bowls.

I know all of this data from amazingly true experience. One bit me on the posterior (or rear end; just trying to hide the truth) and it hurt.

One last thing: it was hard to get my itch eraser to it.

I'm not intending to offend you people out there, but you really should switch to Firefox.

You see, in a recent study, Firefox's usage took up 7% while Internet Explorer took up 89% of usage in US. That means that since more people use Internet Explorer, more viruses and worms will be targeted at them.

However, take time to switch. The new IE7 Beta2 is turning out pretty good (available now, for WinVista).

QWERTY: Can't Live Without It

I'm one of those people who love keyboards. Especially QWERTY. I think DVORAK is much too old and it's not good enough for my delicate hands. :)

A few days ago, I was using a cell phone when I remembered I needed to enter in my friend's number into the phone book. So I popped it up and it asked me to enter his name. I believe that was the most neck-straining thing I have ever experienced.

I bent my head down for three minutes! First, pressing a numerical key three times to get to the letter but accidentally pressing it once extra getting me "Bo(" instead of "Bob". And if that wasn't all, it asked me for the address.

I'm the kind of person that likes everything complete. But did I like doing it this time? Nope. But my brain kept on tempting me. That was the kind of thing that made me mad.

Either way, it's pretty obvious for now. QWERTY keyboards rule out the numerical press-three-times-or-less for now. Those Treo things are getting quite useful now.

WEDNESDAY MAY 24, 2006

Like all Windows before it, Windows Vista will introduce a number of new technologies and features--and, as usual, Microsoft has coined terms (most of them trademarked) for each and every one. Here's a quick glossary.

BitLocker: Drive-encryption technology designed to safeguard data from unauthorized users. The feature is primarily intended to protect systems that have been stolen or hacked.

Certified for Windows Vista: The wording on a sticker indicating that a peripheral or non-PC device can take advantage of features in Windows Vista, such as SideShow. This is a step up from Works With Windows Vista.

FlexGo: A Microsoft-backed program to sell PCs in emerging economies using the pay-as-you-go model that has proved successful for cell phones. Individuals in developing nations would be able to take home a $600 PC for as little as $250 to $300, but it would have usage-monitoring software on it, and after a certain amount of time, the PC would shut down until the owner purchased cards for additional system time. After the owner had made enough additional payments, they would own the system outright.

OCUR (OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver): Devices such as TV tuners that will leverage Windows Vista's HDTV features, including support for one-way CableCards, digital video recording, and the ability to stream recorded programs to Media Center Extenders throughout a home.

ReadyBoost: A cheap alternative to buying extra RAM, ReadyBoost lets your PC use free memory on a USB flash drive to augment RAM. You'd need, at a minimum, a drive with 256MB of free space that can read data at 2.5 megabits per second and write at 1.5 mbps; to qualify for a Windows Vista logo, the drive would need 500MB of space and have read/write speeds of 5 mbps/3 mbps, respectively.

SPR (System Performance Rating): This is basically a benchmark that assigns a numerical rating (on a scale of 1 to 5) to your system and identifies components that are slowing it down. It's accessible from the Vista Control Panel.

SuperFetch: Technology that's supposed to speed up system performance by optimizing system memory based on monitoring how you use your PC.

Windows Connect Now: Technology designed to simplify setup of network devices in general and Wi-Fi devices in particular. Based on the Wi-Fi Alliance's forthcoming Simple Config, Connect Now technology would make Wi-Fi devices that use it instantly visible to a designated Registrar (for most people, this would be a Windows Vista PC) that would configure it over the air after the user had verified ownership by typing in a PIN provided with the device. When Vista ships, it will not support wireless configuration of the first Connect Now router in a home; you'll still need to go through the ethernet hookup. Microsoft expects to release a software update that will enable wireless setup for initial routers or access points.

Windows Rally: A family of technologies designed to simplify setup, security, and management of networked devices. Rally technologies include Windows Connect Now for easy Wi-Fi setup; Plug and Play Extensions (PnP-x) for easy installation of networked-connected devices; and the Link Layer Topology Discovery protocol for easy discovery of networked devices.

Windows SideShow: Technology that affords access to data on Windows Vista PCs--even when they're hibernating--from auxiliary displays on a range of devices, such as a small LCD on the lid of a closed laptop or a Windows Mobile Smartphone. You could use a SideShow device to check an Outlook calendar or contact data, and third-party developers will be able to write SideShow-aware applications.

Windows Vista Capable: Wording on a sticker that indicates a PC will be able to run Windows Vista, but without all its bells and whistles. Not as good as Windows Vista Premium Ready.

Windows Vista Premium Ready: A sticker with this phrase indicates that the PC can run Windows Vista with its most resource-intensive options, including the Aero interface. Better than Windows Vista Capable.

Works With Windows Vista: This designates a peripheral or device that won't crash if you use it with Windows Vista, but doesn't particularly benefit from use with the operating system. Not as good as a Certified for Windows Vista sticker.

XPS (XML Paper Specification): A new XML-based document format that's compatible with the XML file formats in Office 2007 and offers some of the benefits of Adobe's PDF. An XPS document viewer is integrated into Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista, and the OS also can create XPS documents from other applications through the use of a virtual print driver.

FOCUS: Universal Serial Bus

Walking on the online pathway, spending your time. What is USB? United Streaming Bargainer? Underaged Sporting Bicycle? (Those aren't ports, are they?) WHAT IS USB? Congragulations, you've experienced the USB Sydrome (joke). But what is USB mean?

USB stands for "Universal Serial Bus". It is a port that is widely used for connecting objects. Some of the most frequent objects that use USB ports (most of them) are:

Cameras

Keyboards

Mouses

Overheads

many more

A USB port is something that 1) on the older computers is on the back; you might only have a few 2) on the newer computers it is on the front with some on the back; you should have at least 4 on a desktop.

But now, it's out. In the matter of fact, it's WAY out. Origami Project is a Ultra Mobile Peronal Computer, or UMPC. It's real small and somewhat like a horizontal PDA. The first has came out already under Sony's brand. Check it out on Engadget.

(And you can brag now about the UMPC thing. Not many people know.)
